Yes, I fell behind. I couldn't decide on a favorite movie. I spent much of the night weighing different movies, different scenes, and trying to settle on one.
I'm not a huge fan of re-watching movies again and again. There are only a few I'll watch repeatedly (like when they pop up on cable TV). The Princess Bride, Idiocracy, most of the James Bond movies, Better Off Dead with John Cusack, the Twilight saga (I know, I know...) But the one that always, without fail, sucks me in time and again is this one...


While I love the entire movie, that particular scene gets me every time. Epic romantic moment, IMO.

Someone is remaking Footloose. Zac Efron will replace Kevin Bacon in the starring role. Seriously?

Hawaii 5-0 has been resurrected from the television graveyard. What's next, a new version of M*A*S*H? Cheers? Dynasty?

Ten minutes of ANY reality television program, from "Wife Swap" to "1000 Ways to Die" to "The Bachelor" and "The Bachelorette" is enough to convince me whoever is writing the scripts (and don't try to convince me those shows aren't scripted) have never had to listen to their own stuff.

All of it points to the gradual decimation of creativity in popular culture. Based on what shows up on the small screen and the big screen, where have the original thoughts, lines, plots, characters, and (most especially) dialogue gone?

Thank heaven for books, where fresh inspiration blooms on our virtual (and real) shelves year-round like Nero Wolfe's hothouse orchids. (Did anyone else have a terrible crush on Archie Goodwin?)

Now if I could just figure out a way to read while cooking, washing dishes, taking a shower, sleeping, and driving... The library frowns on those grease spots, my Kindle dislikes water, and if texting while driving is not acceptable, surely reading and driving is taboo as well.

Does it bother you when movies, TV shows, music, and other forms of creative expression are recycled from generation to generation?

This is a reblog of an earlier post. I'm going to see "New Moon" in the theater this weekend, Stephenie Meyer was on Oprah, authors are screaming about how unfair her success is, and vampire books, movies, and television shows are springing up like dandelions. What's the fuss? Without getting too religious about the moral value of the vampire myth, let's just look at a possible reason for its broad appeal. Something is drawing people to the Twilight Saga... could it be a driving inner thirst, not for human blood, but for love? For a Savior willing to sacrifice Himself for us?

I confess, I'm a closet Twilight fan. With no movie theater in town, no kids in public school, and a personal distaste for all things vampire in nature, Twilight never even blipped on my radar screen. I saw the books by Stephenie Meyer at Wal-Mart, but wrote them off as "young adult" novels. And then my daughter and her fiance brought the movie version home on DVD.
Edward's appeal is his willingness to lay down his life and deny his own desires for the sake of the woman he loves. What woman doesn't want to be loved and desired so deeply, so intensely, that the man she loves is willing to risk himself – not just physically – but emotionally, socially, and mentally as he reveals the deepest secrets of his heart and exposes his true identity, to her?
