"And here I wish I could tell you half the things Alice used to say, beginning with her favorite phrase 'Let's pretend.'"

Through the Looking Glass

Entire days, maybe even weeks, of my childhood were wrapped up in games of pretend. Sometimes the games involved toys - Breyer horses and dollhouses and stuffed animals - and sometimes they didn't. There were Olympic events featuring the water skippers and beetles in the pond, and entire dwellings made for a family of tiny people who lived in the bookcase.

Sometimes the material world and my imaginary one intersected. My family of tiny people needed to eat, after all, and what better food for them than bits of rice and oats and unpopped popcorn? Tiny hunks of cheddar cheese and scraps of bread found their way to my miniature family's home. My mother insists my imaginary play is the reason our house was infested with mice. Happy, well-fed mice.

I listened to my kids - now in their teens - talking about the imaginary games they played together. As the "adult," I was not privy to those games because "grown-ups don't play pretend."

Oh, we can borrow other people's imaginations and pretend vicariously through books and movies or virtual reality, but when it comes to that place where imagination and reality meet, most of us feel forced to "grow out of it." Folks who continue to "pretend" into adulthood tend to be labeled "weird," or "crazy," or "strange." Unless, of course, they can make money with their pretending, and then we applaud their activities and give them cute gold statues.

I believe we all need to do some pretending, every day. The realm of imagination is a place of hope and possibility. As children it's where we learn about relationships, and communication, and problem-solving. When we succeed in our imaginary games, we take that confidence into our daily life.

If I said to you, "let's pretend." What imaginary game would you choose to play? Why?

No critiques of the film from me, just something to consider...

"Alice laughed: "There's no use trying," she said; "one can't believe impossible things."
"I daresay you haven't had much practice," said the Queen. "When I was younger, I always did it for half an hour a day. Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast."

~ Through the Looking Glass

Believing is the genesis of the power to change yourself, your neighborhood, your country, and your world. (If you're shaking your head and saying, "that's impossible..." you can add that statement to your list.) Someone, somewhere, at some point in time, believed the following:

• that a ship could sail around the world without falling off the horizon's edge.
• that man could fly through the sky like a bird.
• that electricity could be harnessed and controlled.
• that it was possible to travel to the moon and back.
• that slavery would come to an end in the United States.
• that the Iron Curtain in Berlin would fall

And what about satellites and cell phones, television and automobiles? We live and dwell right in the midst of another generation's impossibility! It all began with a thought, followed by a word, and a corresponding action. One person's believing spread to another person, and another, and another, and eventually, the impossible became possible.

"For with God nothing is ever impossible and no word from God shall be without power or impossible of fulfillment." Luke 1:37

"But He said, 'What is impossible with men is possible with God.'" Luke 18:27

What are your six impossible things?

The copy of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland I'm reading has been in my possession since I was a little girl. It was part of a set that included The Wizard of Oz and Arabian Nights and Rudyard Kipling's Just So Stories. In this set, the margins contain pen-and-ink illustrations and/or definitions of some of the words used in the stories. While reading a book written in England during the Victorian era (Queen Victoria herself was one of the first fans of Alice) this kind of commentary comes in handy.

For example, hatters, people who made and shaped the fashionable hats worn at the time, were commonly known to behave in all sorts of strange ways. Why? Because the chemicals used in the hat-making process were toxic.

From wikipedia: Although the name "Mad Hatter" was undoubtedly inspired by the phrase "as mad as a hatter", there is some uncertainty as to the origins of this phrase. As mercury was used in the process of curing pelts used in some hats, it was impossible for hatters to avoid inhaling the mercury fumes given off during the hatmaking process. Hatters and mill workers often suffered mercury poisoning as residual mercury vapor caused neurological damage including confused speech and distorted vision; hatmaking was the main trade in Stockport, near where Carroll grew up. It was not unusual then for hatters to appear disturbed or mentally confused; many died early as a result of mercury poisoning. However, the Mad Hatter does not exhibit the symptoms of mercury poisoning, which include "excessive timidity, diffidence, increasing shyness, loss of self-confidence, anxiety, and a desire to remain unobserved and unobtrusive."^[1]

Like Minnie Pearl, the Mad Hatter has the price tag on his hat in the story. I suppose we'll see if that detail carries over to the film this weekend! And look for straw on the March Hare's head, which was considered a sign of madness. The March Hare is frequently depicted with pieces of straw scattered on his head. Well, technically the March Hare should probably be female, not male, but no one knew that at the time...

Via wikipedia: It is reported in The Annotated Alice by Martin Gardner that this proverb is based on popular belief about hares' behaviour at the beginning of the long breeding season, which lasts from February to September in Britain. Early in the season, unreceptive females often use their forelegs to repel overenthusiastic males. It used to be incorrectly believed that these bouts were between males fighting for breeding supremacy.^[2]

Yesterday, I came to the famous tea party scene where Alice meets the Mad Hatter and the March Hare.  eternally trapped at six o'clock. The Hatter's crime, according to the Queen of Hearts: "murdering the time."
Ouch.
We were notified by scientists yesterday that the violent Chilean earthquake (the seventh strongest on record)  last weekend has bumped the earth off its axis a bit, thereby shortening the duration of each day by fractions of a second. Remember pinball games? When you wiggled the machine around to move the ball it buzzed and blinked "TILT" and everyone knew you were cheating? Is that what the earth is trying to tell us? Just a thought.

Time is our one constant, the great equalizer. No matter where you live, your gender, your age, your political party or your socioeconomic status, we've all got the same amount of time in a day. Maybe not the same number of days total, but if we take one day at a time, as Jesus admonished us to do, we all start out on equal footing. And time seems even more elusive and out of our control than money!

What we do with each day is, for the most part, up to us. Will we use the time we have with wisdom, or will we let the hours dribble through our fingers and trap ourselves, as the Mad Hatter and the March Hare are trapped, in an endless rotation of meals, nonsensical riddles, and questions with no answers?

Or are we like the dormouse, sleeping through the party, waiting for some as yet unannounced event to lure us out of hibernation? The dormouse, you know, shouldn't have been sleeping at all, since the story is set in May.

My own attempts to stop murdering time usually twiddle out after a few hours. I need help! I have this verse tucked in the front of my planner, and I think of it frequently. It's a good thing to pray!

"So teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom."

Psalm 90:12

Literary nonsense.

I'll admit, I'd never even heard of such a thing until I started digging for some background on Alice in Wonderland. It's a whole style of writing which Wikipedia describes like this: "In the exhibition of literary nonsense, formal diction and tone may be balanced with elements of absurdity."

There was nothing so very remarkable in that; nor did Alice think it so very much out of the ordinary to hear the Rabbit say to itself 'Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be too late!' ...but when the Rabbit actually took a watch out its waistcoat pocket, and looked at it, and then hurried on, Alice startled to her feet.

The writings of Dr. Seuss and Shel Silverstein are considered authors of literary nonsense, as are Carl Sandburg and John Lennon.

Lewis Carroll published Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in 1865. The book has never gone out of print, remaining a favorite of children and adults for generations. The first silent film version was created in 1903. Two more silent films and a series of "talkies" followed.

Disney's fully animated version, with its memorable images, reached the screen in 1951.

Multiple spin-offs, made-for-TV versions, children's books and comics have been produced since.

Carroll, whose real name was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, has been accused of everything from drug addiction to pedophilia over the years. A mathematics professor at Christ Church university in England, Dodgson was also a deacon in the Anglican church and a friend and contemporary of the Reverend George MacDonald. MacDonald, a Christian minister, poet, and novelist, is said to have influenced C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Madeline L'Engle with his fantasy stories.

Lewis was also an accomplished photographer

After writing the story of Alice and her adventures underground, Dodgson/Carroll shared the story with MacDonald, who read the tale to his brood of children. The story was so well-received by them, MacDonald strongly encouraged his friend to seek publication.

As with all classic literature, Alice and her imaginary world have been the subject of much speculation. Mathematicians have searched for mathematical equations and expressions hidden within the text. History buffs have searched for pictures of the children to whom the tale was first told, and combed Lewis' haunts for sites that may have inspired the rabbit hole.

So many out-of-the-way things had happened lately, that Alice had begun to think that very few things indeed were really impossible.

Tim Burton's movie version of the Lewis Carroll classic Alice in Wonderland opens in theaters Friday. It couldn't come at a better time. We all need a little nonsense in our lives...

"Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it."
