You know, I found the ...Interesting thoughts, Niki. You know, I found the ship's log from my great-grandmother's journey from Germany, too. She came over in 1865. Every one of my great grandparents came from another country. Germany, France, England, Canada.

I, too, would hate to see the return of internment camps. My dad tells of when he was a little boy in school. I think it was second grade. There were two little Japanese twin boys in his class. During class one day, "they" came and got the two little boys and my dad never saw them again. The way he tells that story...it's always haunted me. So sad, so terrible.Suzie Johnsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06296203324088418271noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2605816413368612595.post-56434013646420499182010-05-14T22:05:26.338-06:002010-05-14T22:05:26.338-06:00Thanks Deb, thoughtful comments!
I agree, personal...Thanks Deb, thoughtful comments!
I agree, personal rights DO take a backseat to community safety; I just hope we don't lean toward the days of "camps" like we did during WWII for the Japanese. Sigh. We could learn so much from history, but no one seems to remember anything that occurred in the past. How would I feel if I were living...A tough subject. How would I feel if I were living in a border area and crime had made the place unsafe? I don't know. But I agree. We've always been willing to let foreigners in, especially if they were like us!

I love Hispanic culture but something is wrong that is not going to be fixed easily because it's been ignored for so long by our lovely capitalist tendencies. If all the people who didn't live here legally left, we'd be paying twice as much for our foods and we're too cheap to do that, so we turn our heads.

Mexico is in a desperate situation because of poverty and the drug trade. How can we turn out backs on people who want to work and support their families? As you say, so desperate they would risk death to get here?

On the other hand, how can a state like Arizona say they are going to check licenses to find out if people are here illegally and then say in the same breath they are not going to do racial profiling? That suburban mom with her SUV and blond children is probably not here illegally. I'm sorry. It's like driving a souped up red sports car... you're just going to get noticed and pulled over more often than someone in an old sedan when you go flying by the police on the interstate.
Some days personal rights do have to take a back seat to the rights of a community to safety.

We've really messed up. A messed up country that people still want to come to because of our love for democracy and freedom!

I love the melting pot!Debra E.
